25 Senior Dog Quotes That Will Make Your Heart Melt

April 24, 2017 by Hindy Pearson

Senior dogs are very special. They’ve given us years of love and loyalty and know our likes and dislikes.

There are so many things to appreciate about older dogs: their soulful eyes, how they are always there for a hug, how they can teach us to slow down and enjoy life more. I could go on.

A lot of people have shared their heartfelt and sentimental thoughts about old, wise dogs. They have generously put those ideas out to the world for others to read and enjoy.

Senior Dog Quote - the relationship is like a marriage

Here is my list of favorite dog quotes about love and loyalty.

Warning, some of these sentimental dog quotes may make you tear up, especially if they help you remember dogs you have loved and lost in the past, so up so you may want to grab a tissue before reading further.

Sentimental Quotes About Senior Dogs

3) “After years of having a dog, you know him. You know the meaning of his snuffs and grunts and barks. Every twitch of the ears are a question or statement, every wag of the tail is an exclamation.” – Robert McCammon

4) “Every white hair is one day of experience in being the very best friend you’ve ever had.” – Jaymi Heimbuch

5) “Such short little lives our pets have to spend with us, and they spend most of it watching for us to come home each day.” – John Grogan

10) “I think dogs are the most amazing creatures; they give unconditional love. For me, they are the role model for being alive.” – Gilda Radner

11) “Dogs come into our lives to teach us about love, they depart to teach us about loss. A new dog never replaces an old dog. It merely expands the heart.”―Author Unknown

Senior Dog Quote - Dogs teach us about love and loss and expand our hearts

12) “Dogs’ lives are too short. Their only fault, really.” – Agnes Turnbull

13) “Dogs die. But dogs live, too. Right up until they die, they live. They live brave, beautiful lives. They protect their families. And love us, and make our lives a little brighter, and they don’t waste time being afraid of tomorrow.” – Dan Gemeinhart

14) “Dogs have given us their absolute all. We are the center of their universe. We are the focus of their love and faith and trust. They serve us in return for scraps. It is without a doubt the best deal man has ever made.” – Roger A. Caras

15) “The bond with a true dog is as lasting as the ties of this earth will ever be.”—Konrad Lorenz

18)When we adopt a dog or any pet, we know it is going to end with us having to say goodbye, but we still do it. And we do it for a very good reason: They bring so much joy and optimism and happiness. They attack every moment of every day with that attitude.” – Bruce Cameron

19) “Dogs’ lives are short, too short, but you know that going in. You know the pain is coming, you’re going to lose a dog, and there’s going to be great anguish, so you live fully in the moment with her, never fail to share her joy or delight in her innocence, because you can’t support the illusion that a dog can be your lifelong companion. There’s such beauty in the hard honesty of that, in accepting and giving love while always aware that it comes with an unbearable price.” – Dean Koontz

20) “Sometimes we put our great treasures in museums, other times we take them for walks.” – Unknown

21) “Dogs are small rays of light caught on earth for a short time to brighten our days.” – Anonymous

Senior Dog Quote - Dogs fulfill a need we didn't know we had

25) “Dogs have a way of finding the people who need them, and filling an emptiness we didn’t ever know we had.” – Thom Jones

And, finally, one of my favorite poems:

When I am old and grey
My step might be slower.

I may not hear as well.
I may not see as well.
I may not feel as well.

But…

My love will be the same.
My devotion will be the same.
My appreciation will be the same.

My heart and soul are grateful.
For all that you have done and do…

When I am old and grey.

Final Thoughts About Senior Dogs

Sadly, many senior dogs end up in shelters at the end of their lives.

Sometimes people get caught up in how much time and energy it takes to meet their needs and forget to appreciate the special companionship of an older dog.

Of these old dogs that get surrendered, many don’t get adopted to live out their golden years in a loving home. People often go to the shelter looking for a puppy and fail to appreciate the benefits of adopting a senior dog.

I hope after reading some of these quotes, you have a new-found appreciation for your senior dog or be inspired to foster or adopt one.
